Sunday Ambience is a new studio, and the visuals shown here are concept boards, the first thing a client receives at the start of a project. They illustrate rustic luxury as we design it: honest, matt materials, rustic warmth and generous empty space. As our clients’ projects are completed, and only ever with their consent, they will be shared here too.

Sage walls, a cream linen sofa and an oak table, worked around the light the room already gets. The olive tree sits in the corner that catches the most sun, which is the only spot it would do well in.

A walled courtyard, softened

Four walls can feel like a box or a room, and the difference is what you grow up them. Roses and jasmine take the hard edges off, the seating faces the last of the sun, and everything else lives in terracotta so it can shift as the garden settles.

Borders you can sit inside

Most gardens push the seating to the edge and the flowers to the fence. This does the opposite. The bench sits within the planting, so you are surrounded by it rather than looking at it from a distance, and it is chosen to flower right through the season.

A balcony that feels like a room

Small does not have to mean sparse. Everything is in containers, so it suits a rental and comes with you, and the planting is deliberately generous, because a balcony feels bigger when it is green on every side rather than tidy and bare.

For the plot that bakes all afternoon. Gravel keeps the roots cool and the weeds down, the planting is chosen to enjoy the heat instead of merely surviving it, and once settled it needs very little water.

The tree you already have is usually the best room in the garden. Lights strung through the branches and a table underneath turn it into somewhere to eat all summer, with no building work and nothing permanent to undo.

An outdoor room with a fire

A design that extends the garden into spring and autumn. A roof overhead and a fire in the corner mean it is used in October as well as in July. It is a substantial build, and so better suited to owners than to renters.

For a suntrap that needs somewhere to hide at midday. A vine trained overhead does the shading, lime-washed walls bounce the light around, and everything else lives in terracotta, so it can be moved as the garden settles.
